Quick Facts: Well-Woman Exams
Well-woman exams are preventive visits focused on reproductive, hormonal, and age-specific health, even if you are not experiencing symptoms.
These visits include screenings such as Pap smears, HPV testing, and preventive counseling, based on your age and personal health history.
Well-woman care is typically provided in primary care with coordinated referral to OB/GYN specialists when needed, ensuring continuous, comprehensive care.
A well-woman exam is a preventive visit focused on reproductive, hormonal, and age-specific health needs. Even if you feel well, annual preventive care plays a key role in early detection, cancer screening, and long-term wellness.
At CLS Health, well-woman exams are provided through family medicine and primary care — with seamless referral to OB/GYN when specialized care is needed.
Who Should Schedule a Well-Woman Exam?
Well-woman exams are recommended for:
- Women beginning in early adulthood (typically starting at age 21)
- Women ages 21–65 who are due for cervical cancer screening
- Women transitioning off pediatric care into adult preventive care
- Postmenopausal women
- Women with new symptoms such as irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, or hormonal concerns
Even after menopause — and even after certain types of hysterectomy — preventive evaluation may still be appropriate depending on your history.
If you’re unsure whether you’re due, your provider can review your screening schedule and risk factors.
What Is Included in a Well-Woman Exam?
Your visit is personalized based on age, medical history, and risk profile. It may include:
Health & Reproductive History Review
- Menstrual cycle and hormonal symptoms
- Sexual health and STD risk assessment
- Contraceptive counseling
- Pregnancy planning or menopause management
- Family history of breast, ovarian, or cervical cancer
Physical Examination
- Blood pressure, height, weight
- Clinical breast exam
- Pelvic exam when appropriate
- Pap smear based on age and screening guidelines
Cervical Cancer Screening Guidelines
- Ages 21–29: Pap smear every 3 years
- Ages 30–65: Pap smear every 3 years or Pap + HPV testing every 5 years
Your provider will confirm the appropriate schedule based on your personal history.
Preventive Screenings & Counseling
Well-woman exams also support whole-person health. Your visit may include:
- Depression screening
- Intimate partner violence screening
- Tobacco and substance use counseling
- Weight and nutrition counseling
- Vaccination review (including HPV, Tdap, and others as appropriate)
- Bone health risk assessment
- Mammogram referral when indicated
Not every screening is performed at every visit — care is individualized.
Is a Well-Woman Exam the Same as an Annual Physical?
- No. A well-woman exam focuses specifically on reproductive and gynecologic health, while an annual physical evaluates overall health and preventive risks.
- A general physical exam addresses broader medical concerns such as cardiovascular health, cholesterol, diabetes screening, thyroid disorders, and other systemic conditions.
In many primary care settings, these services may be combined into one comprehensive visit.
When Is Referral to OB/GYN Recommended?
Your primary care provider may coordinate a referral for:
- Abnormal Pap smear results
- Persistent pelvic pain
- Irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding
- High-risk pregnancy planning
- Complex menopause management
- Surgical or procedural evaluation
Because CLS Health operates within a coordinated network, referrals are streamlined to avoid delays in care.
Insurance & Coverage
Most accepted insurance plans — including those under the Affordable Care Act — cover annual well-woman exams as preventive care.
Additional laboratory testing, imaging, or diagnostic follow-up may involve separate coverage. Our team can help verify the benefits before your visit.
