Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician
Attiyah Zaheer, MD, MPH, is a board-certified family medicine physician at CLS Health who provides comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages — from children to older adults.
With a strong focus on preventive medicine, chronic disease management, and patient education, Dr. Zaheer helps individuals and families navigate their health with confidence and clarity. Her approach blends evidence-based medicine with long-term relationship-building to support better health outcomes across every stage of life.
Dr. Zaheer brings experience across outpatient, inpatient, and academic medical settings and has contributed to community outreach, medical education, and patient-centered care initiatives.
“Family medicine allows you to see the full picture of a patient’s health,” Dr. Zaheer explains. “You’re coordinating care, managing chronic conditions, focusing on prevention, and helping patients make informed decisions about their health.”
A Personal Journey into Medicine
Dr. Zaheer’s path to medicine was shaped by a deeply personal experience.
A close family member was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer after preventive care opportunities had been missed, and the healthcare system proved difficult to navigate. Watching her struggle with delayed diagnosis, insurance barriers, and fragmented care ultimately inspired Dr. Zaheer to pursue a career in medicine.
That experience also strengthened her commitment to preventive care and early detection.
“I saw firsthand how difficult navigating the healthcare system can be and how much difference preventive care can make,” she recalls. “That experience pushed me toward medicine and toward helping patients receive the care they need before problems become severe.”
Dr. Zaheer began her medical journey with a Master of Public Health before completing medical school and residency training in family medicine.
Why Family Medicine
During clinical rotations in medical school, Dr. Zaheer discovered that family medicine offered a unique opportunity to care for the whole patient while coordinating care across multiple specialties.
Family medicine also allows her to develop long-term relationships with patients and their families.
“You can care for someone before their child is born, help deliver that baby, and then care for that child as they grow,” she explains. “You’re supporting the health of the entire family.”
She values the broad scope of family medicine, which allows physicians to address preventive care, chronic disease management, mental health concerns, and lifestyle factors in one setting.
Clinical Focus & Special Interests
Dr. Zaheer has a particular interest in preventive medicine and chronic disease management, areas strongly influenced by her background in public health.
Her clinical focus includes:
- Preventive care and annual wellness exams
- Hypertension (high blood pressure) management
- Diabetes screening and treatment
- Women’s health screenings (Pap smears and mammogram referrals)
- Pediatric and adolescent care
- Respiratory infections and acute illnesses
- Lifestyle-related health conditions such as obesity
“Preventing disease is always better than treating complications later,” she explains. “Simple screenings and early detection can make an enormous difference in someone’s life.”
A Patient-Centered Approach to Care
Dr. Zaheer believes effective primary care requires open communication and collaboration between physician and patient.
She practices shared decision-making, ensuring patients understand their health conditions and feel comfortable participating in their care plans.
“It’s about creating a space where patients feel comfortable having honest conversations about their health,” she says. “When patients understand their options and feel heard, we can make better decisions together.”
Her approach focuses on education, transparency, and individualized care tailored to each patient’s lifestyle and goals.
A Common Misconception About Primary Care
One misconception Dr. Zaheer frequently hears is that primary care physicians only treat minor illnesses or simply provide referrals.
Family medicine physicians provide a wide range of services, including preventive screenings, chronic disease management, mental health support, and minor procedures.
“Family medicine physicians can do much more than many people realize,” she explains. “We manage many conditions directly and help guide patients through every stage of their healthcare journey.”
Prevention & Long-Term Health
Preventive care is a central part of Dr. Zaheer’s practice.
Rather than limiting preventive discussions to annual physical exams, she reviews preventive care needs during many patient visits to ensure screenings remain up to date.
This may include:
- Blood pressure screening
- Diabetes testing
- Mammograms
- Colon cancer screening
- Vaccination updates
She also emphasizes patient education, helping patients understand how preventive tests work, and why they matter.
“When patients understand the purpose behind a test or screening, they’re much more comfortable completing it,” she explains.
Serving the Sugar Land Community
Practicing in Sugar Land is particularly meaningful for Dr. Zaheer because of the region’s diverse population and strong South Asian community.
She values the opportunity to care for patients who share similar cultural backgrounds and health concerns.
Certain communities face higher risks for conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, and Dr. Zaheer is passionate about helping patients understand those risks and take preventive action.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to serve a community where you understand the culture, the language, and the health challenges patients face,” she says.
Integrated Care at CLS Health
Dr. Zaheer appreciates CLS Health’s multi-specialty healthcare model, which allows patients to access multiple services within the same network.
Patients benefit from convenient access to:
- On-site laboratory services
- Specialist referrals within the CLS Health network
- Coordinated care across multiple specialties
This streamlined approach improves efficiency, reduces barriers to care, and increases the likelihood that patients complete recommended testing and follow-up visits.
“It saves patients time and helps them stay engaged with their care,” she explains.
