What Does a Urologist Treat?

Urologists are doctors who specialize in treating conditions affecting the urinary tract in both men and women, as well as disorders of the male reproductive system. Their expertise includes medical and surgical treatments.

Common conditions urologists treat include:

Urologist vs. Nephrologist: What’s the Difference?

Although both urologists and nephrologists provide kidney-related care, their roles are distinct. Urologists specialize in the urinary tract and male reproductive system, often focusing on surgical treatments and structural issues. Nephrologists, in contrast, concentrate on kidney health and function.

  • Urologist: Specializes in diagnosing and treating structural issues and conditions that may require surgical intervention in the urinary tract and male reproductive system, such as kidney stones, cancers, and urinary incontinence.
  • Nephrologist: Focuses on managing kidney function and systemic conditions related to internal medicine, such as chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and high blood pressure (hypertension).

Conditions Treated

Our urologists specialize in low testosterone, erectile dysfunction (ED), male infertility, testicular pain or swelling, and Peyronie’s disease. We provide advanced evaluation and therapies including peptide therapy, hormone replacement, and non-surgical ED treatments. Care plans are discreet, effective, and designed to restore confidence and quality of life.

We diagnose and treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, elevated PSA, and prostate cancer using advanced imaging and minimally invasive therapies. Options such as UroLift®, Aquablation®, Rezūm™, and GreenLight™ laser therapy help relieve urinary symptoms with faster recovery. Our specialists also perform prostate biopsies and genetic screenings for early cancer detection.

Our team treats urinary tract infections (UTIs), hematuria (blood in urine), and kidney stones using both medication and non-invasive procedures. Treatments such as ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) effectively remove stones and restore kidney function. We also manage bladder tumors and perform cystoscopy for diagnosis and ongoing monitoring.

We care for patients with neurogenic bladder, overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, urethral strictures, and voiding dysfunction. Treatments include intravesical Botox®, urethral slings, urodynamic testing, and nerve stimulation (InterStim®, Axonics®) to improve bladder control. For women, we address pelvic organ prolapse and recurrent UTIs with specialized therapies.

Our urologists provide comprehensive care for overactive bladder, recurrent UTIs, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and voiding dysfunction. We offer intravesical Botox®, urethral sling surgery, and minimally invasive prolapse repair to restore comfort and confidence. Genetic carrier screening is also available for family planning and hereditary condition assessment.

Treatments & Procedures

We offer advanced procedures including vasectomy, adult circumcision, spermatocelectomy, and Trimix® therapy for erectile dysfunction. For hormone optimization, options include bio-identical testosterone pellets, injections, and peptide therapy to safely restore balance and vitality.

Our specialists perform UroLift®, Aquablation®, TURP, Rezūm™, and GreenLight™ laser therapy to relieve prostate obstruction with minimal downtime. For prostate cancer evaluation, we offer biopsy, genetic screening, and robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery (PCNL). Each treatment is tailored to the patient’s diagnosis, age, and goals.

We perform ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy and ESWL for non-invasive kidney stone removal, along with cystoscopy for bladder evaluation. Additional services include hydrocelectomy, intravesical Botox®, and TURBT (transurethral resection of bladder tumor) for bladder cancer care. Urethral sling surgery helps restore bladder control in men and women.

We offer urodynamic testing (UDF) to assess bladder function and guide treatment for prolapse and retention. InterStim® and Axonics® neuromodulation therapies help manage overactive bladder and urinary urgency by regulating nerve activity. These innovative options improve control and quality of life without major surgery.

We provide intravesical Botox®, urethral sling surgery, and pelvic organ prolapse repair to address urinary leakage and pelvic support concerns. These procedures are minimally invasive and often performed on an outpatient basis for faster recovery and improved comfort.

FAQs

You should see a urologist if you experience urinary issues like difficulty urinating, blood in the urine, recurrent UTIs, or incontinence.

Additionally, conditions such as kidney stones, erectile dysfunction, or male and female reproductive concerns may require a urologist’s expertise.

Men should also consider seeing a urologist for regular prostate cancer screening, especially if they are over 50 or have a family history of prostate cancer.

A urologist treats male-specific conditions, including prostate issues (BPH, prostatitis, or cancer), erectile dysfunction, infertility, kidney stones, and urinary incontinence. They also perform vasectomies and testosterone replacement therapy.

For females, a urologist addresses urinary incontinence, recurrent UTIs, overactive bladder, pelvic organ prolapses, and kidney stones. They also treat certain cancers, such as bladder cancer, and other urinary tract disorders.

During a urology appointment, the urologist will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and perform a physical exam. Diagnostic tests, such as urine analysis, imaging, or blood tests, may also be conducted to identify the cause of your symptoms.

A urologist can diagnose low testosterone through blood tests and recommend testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). They monitor your hormone levels and adjust treatments like injections, gels, patches, and pellets to restore balance and improve symptoms.

Yes, a urologist specializes in diagnosing and treating erectile dysfunction (ED). Treatments may include medications, lifestyle changes, devices, or surgical options like penile implants.

Yes, an enlarged prostate (BPH) can cause blood in the urine. This occurs due to increased pressure on the bladder or irritation of the prostate tissue. A urologist can evaluate and treat the underlying condition.

Urologists treat kidney stones with non-invasive methods like extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and minimally invasive procedures such as ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy or percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). They also provide dietary advice to prevent recurrence.

A urologist treats overactive bladder with medications, bladder Botox injections, pelvic floor therapy, sacral neuromodulation, and lifestyle changes to manage symptoms and improve bladder control.
