What Is Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive spinal procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures (VCFs), commonly caused by osteoporosis, trauma, or cancer. The procedure helps restore vertebral height, reduce pain, and improve mobility by injecting bone cement into the fractured vertebra after creating space with a balloon-like device.

Signs of Compression Fractures

Vertebral compression fractures can develop gradually or suddenly, often causing significant discomfort. Common signs include:

  • Severe Back Pain – Sudden or persistent pain, especially in the mid or lower back.
  • Loss of Height – A noticeable reduction in height over time due to vertebral collapse.
  • Hunched Posture (Kyphosis) – A forward-bending spine, commonly called a “dowager’s hump.”
  • Limited Mobility – Difficulty bending, twisting, or performing daily activities.
  • Pain Worsening with Movement – Increased discomfort when standing, walking, or lifting.

If you're experiencing these symptoms, early diagnosis and treatment with procedures like kyphoplasty can help restore spinal function and relieve pain

Benefits of Kyphoplasty

  1. Immediate Pain Relief – Many patients experience pain reduction within 24 hours
  2. Improved Mobility – Restores vertebral height and spinal alignment.
  3. Minimally Invasive – No large incisions, minimal blood loss.
  4. Quick Recovery – Most patients resume daily activities within a few days
  5. Prevents Further Fractures – Stabilizes the spine to reduce the risk of additional fractures.

Risks of Kyphoplasty

While kyphoplasty is generally safe, potential risks include:

  • Infection – Rare but possible at the incision site.
  • Cement Leakage – Minimal risk of bone cement leaking outside the vertebra.
  • Nerve Damage – Extremely rare, but possible if the spinal cord is affected.
  • Blood Clots – Can occur but are uncommon with proper post-op care.

Our specialists take every precaution to minimize risks and ensure a safe procedure.

Post-Op Care & Recovery

  • Most patients can walk within hours after the procedure
  • Mild soreness at the incision site is normal and subsides within a few days.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for 2-4 weeks
  • Follow-up appointments ensure proper healing and prevent future fractures.

Who’s a Candidate for Kyphoplasty?

You may be a good candidate if you have:

  • Painful vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis or trauma.
  • Difficulty standing or walking due to spinal instability.
  • Fractures that haven’t healed with conservative treatments like rest or pain medication.

Kyphoplasty is not ideal for patients with spinal infections or severe degenerative spine conditions

Is Kyphoplasty Safe for Elderly Patients?

Yes! Kyphoplasty is an ideal treatment for elderly patients with osteoporosis-related fractures. The minimally invasive approach and quick recovery make it a safe and effective option for restoring mobility and reducing pain in seniors.

Kyphoplasty for Cancer Patients

Kyphoplasty can help patients with spinal tumors or cancer-related fractures by:

  • Reducing spinal pain from cancer-related bone damage.
  • Strengthening weakened vertebrae to prevent further fractures.
  • Improving mobility and quality of life during cancer treatment.

With Dr. Thomas and his staff's help, I’m enjoying a quality of life I didn’t think was possible.
