Helping You Take Control of Your Mental Health

Mental health struggles can feel isolating, but you don’t have to face them alone. CLS Health psychiatrist, Rudy Lozano, MD, offers compassionate and effective care for depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.

Dr. Lozano provides psychiatric care for adults, starting with thorough evaluations to assess mental health concerns and guide treatment. Services include medication management to help regulate symptoms, psychotherapy to address emotional and behavioral challenges, and stress management strategies to improve coping skills and overall well-being.

Whether you’re seeking care for the first time or need ongoing support, Dr. Lozano develops individualized treatment plans to help you find relief and move forward.

Psychiatrist vs Psychologist: What’s the Difference?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders, often using medications alongside therapy.

Psychiatrists focus on conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, where brain chemistry and medical interventions play a key role. In contrast, a psychologist holds a Ph.D. or Psy.D. and primarily provides therapy and behavioral interventions without prescribing medication (except in some states with special training).

Psychologists help patients manage emotional, cognitive, and behavioral issues through counseling, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and psychological assessments.

While psychiatrists are best for patients needing medication management, psychologists are appropriate for those seeking therapy-based treatment. Many individuals benefit from a collaborative approach involving both professionals for comprehensive mental health care.

FAQs

During your first psychiatric consultation, the objective is to understand your mental health concerns, medical history, and treatment goals. The psychiatrist will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms to determine their cause. At the end of the session, a diagnosis and treatment plan will be discussed. If a specialized treatment is needed beyond the clinic’s services, a referral to the appropriate provider will be given.

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It is diagnosed through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, as there is no single test for ADHD. A psychiatrist will assess symptoms, rule out other conditions, and determine if ADHD is present. Treatment often includes medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle modifications

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is marked by persistent sadness, loss of interest, fatigue, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness. Some individuals may also experience changes in appetite, physical aches, or thoughts of self-harm. If these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, seeking professional help is recommended.

Adjustment Disorder is a mental health condition triggered by a significant life change or stressful event, such as job loss, divorce, or the death of a loved one. It leads to emotional distress, anxiety, sadness, and difficulty coping beyond what is considered normal. Symptoms usually appear within three months of the stressor and improve over time with therapy, support, and coping strategies.

A bipolar episode refers to an extreme mood shift in individuals with Bipolar Disorder. There are two main types:

  • Manic Episode – Elevated mood, increased energy, reduced need for sleep, impulsivity, and sometimes delusions or hallucinations.
  • Depressive Episode – Persistent sadness, fatigue, low motivation, and feelings of worthlessness. Bipolar Disorder requires medical management with mood stabilizers, therapy, and lifestyle adjustments.

A geriatric psychiatrist is a specialist who diagnoses and treats mental health conditions in older adults, such as dementia, depression, anxiety, and late-onset mood disorders. They focus on age-related changes in brain function, medication management, and improving the overall well-being of elderly patients.

Anxiety triggers the amygdala, the brain's fear center, leading to heightened alertness, increased heart rate, and excessive worry. Over time, chronic anxiety can impact memory, concentration, and emotional regulation by altering brain chemistry and increasing stress hormone levels. Therapy, mindfulness, and medication can help manage anxiety effectively.

Psychiatrists treat insomnia and other sleep disorders through a combination of:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) – A structured therapy that addresses negative thoughts about sleep.
  • Medication Management – Prescribing sleep aids when necessary, such as melatonin or low-dose antidepressants.
  • Sleep Hygiene Coaching – Developing routines to improve sleep quality, such as limiting screen time before bed and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule.

You may need to see a psychiatrist if you experience:

  • Persistent sadness, anxiety, or mood swings that interfere with daily life.
  • Difficulty coping with stress, relationships, or traumatic events.
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy levels.
  • Inability to focus, increased impulsivity, or disruptive behaviors.
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicidal ideation.

A psychiatrist can provide the necessary support, diagnosis, and treatment for better mental health.
